Coral Reefs & Marine Biodiversity
Tavolo's reefs support incredible biodiversity. The coral communities include both hard corals forming reef structures and soft corals providing shelter for innumerable fish and invertebrate species.
What You'll See Underwater:
- Coral Species: Brain corals, staghorn corals, soft corals, fire corals, and numerous other coral types creating the reef structure
- Fish Diversity: Colorful reef fish including parrotfish, groupers, snappers, fusiliers, wrasses, and surgeonfish
- Sharks & Rays: Occasionally spotted reef sharks and stingrays that are part of healthy reef communities
- Sea Turtles: Green sea turtles and occasionally hawksbill turtles feed on reef vegetation and invertebrates
- Octopuses & Cephalopods: Master camouflagers and intelligent hunters inhabiting reef crevices
- Nudibranchs & Invertebrates: Bizarre and beautiful shell-less gastropods and other reef invertebrates
The reef is a complex ecosystem where every species plays important roles. Coral provides shelter, corals feed small fish which feed larger fish, and reef debris nourishes countless organisms in reef food webs.
Community Marine Conservation
Local Lote communities have managed marine resources for generations. Tavolo Community Conservation Association Inc.'s approach extends beyond the rainforest to protect coastal ecosystems that equally deserve preservation and sustainable use.
Community Marine Management:
- Traditional Fishing Areas: Designated zones where sustainable fishing practices maintain fish populations while feeding communities
- Marine Protected Zones: Reef areas closed to fishing to allow recovery and protect breeding aggregations
- Monitoring Programs: Community members track fish populations, coral health, and ecosystem indicators
- Sustainable Practices: No dynamite or poison fishing - only selective, low-impact methods that maintain ecosystem function
Your snorkeling tour directly supports community stewardship of marine resources. Revenue helps fund monitoring and enforcement, making conservation economically viable for local communities.
Beach & Island Activities
Beyond snorkeling, Tavolo's coastal areas offer relaxation and exploration. Some marine excursions include time on beaches and nearby islands where you'll swim, relax, and experience tropical island life.
